Adult Orthodontics - Lansdowne

A common misconception about orthodontics is that it is strictly for children. However, one in five orthodontic patients is an adult and the American Association of Orthodontists estimates that nearly one million adults in the United States and Canada are receiving treatment from an orthodontic specialist.

The biological process of tooth movement is the same in adults and children.  In fact, it’s the condition of a person’s teeth, gums, and supporting bone that is the most important element in deciding whether or not to begin treatment.  As the science of orthodontics has developed more gentle wires and more “invisible” braces, adults are now taking advantage of improving their smiles.

Orthodontic treatment at later stages in life can dramatically improve your personal appearance and self-esteem.  Improving the health of your teeth and gums is equally important.  Crooked teeth and a bad bite can contribute to gum and bone loss, tooth decay, abnormal wear of the tooth enamel and surfaces, headaches and jaw joint (TMJ/TMD) pain.

Dr. Hukmani and Dr. Pandya offer a variety of treatments that are designed for different age groups – including adults.  The advanced techniques and appliances we use greatly reduce discomfort levels, decrease the frequency of visits, and shorten treatment time.  Options may include metal braces, clear braces, or transparent aligner appliances.

Often adult patients can be helped with both orthodontic treatment and cosmetic dentistry.  Dr. Hukmani works closely with referring dentists and their patients to discuss cosmetic treatment plans and the role that orthodontics can play in improving a patient’s smile.
