3 Reasons Why Summer is the Best Time to Start Braces

Getting braces can improve your child’s smile and oral health. Braces can help correct several issues including:

If not corrected, these issues may lead to tooth decay, gum disease, chewing problems, and speech problems.

If you’ve been waiting for the right time to improve your child’s teeth, smile and oral health with braces, summer is a great time to embark on this journey, which can take anywhere from six to 30 months.

Dr. Navin Hukmani at Lansdowne Orthodontics shares his three reasons for why you should consider getting your child started on braces this summer.

Don’t have to miss school for appointments

Between homework, multiple after-school activities, sports, and social obligations, your child is busy during the school year. Everyone looks forward to the summer when things slow down.

Orthodontic appointments scheduled during the summer place less stress on you and your child. Since you have more flexibility in scheduling during the summer, you can maximize treatment time and minimize school absences.

Your child has time to adjust to the braces

It can take a while for your child to get used to wearing braces. When first placed, braces may cause some soreness and tenderness. This is normal but can take a few days to subside. It’s also normal for your child’s lips, cheeks, and tongue to be irritated for a few days after getting braces.

Being able to take the time to get used to braces while not in class is the best way for your child to adjust. Dr. Hukmani can suggest a number of ways to help soothe your child’s discomfort as they adjust to their new orthodontic appliances.

Your child can get used to a cleaning and maintenance routine

In addition to getting used to the feeling of braces, your child also will also adjust to modifying their diet and avoiding certain foods that could damage the braces. Some foods your child should avoid include:

Brushing and flossing continue to be important to your child’s oral health as it was before braces, but it’s helpful to learn a few new tricks. For example, your child will need a floss threader or special orthodontic floss to floss behind each wire properly.  Starting braces during summer break is a super way for your child to start the school year confident that wearing braces is a breeze.
