Adult Orthodontics Q & A

Am I too old for braces?

No. No matter how old you are, you can achieve straighter, healthier teeth with Dr. Hukmani’s orthodontic expertise.

Depending on your specific needs, Dr. Hukmani can recommend the best orthodontic services —  whether it’s traditional braces or the innovative Invisalign® orthodontic treatment.

He performs a thorough evaluation of your teeth, jaw position, and also reviews general medical health to create a customized treatment plan just for you.

How long do I have to wear braces?

Dr. Hukmani’s treatment plan will determine how long you need to wear orthodontic devices to achieve your desired results.

Typically, you can expect treatment to last 12-30 months, but it will depend on the factors influencing the condition of your teeth. Paragraph Duplicated remove one paragraph

Does wearing braces hurt?

Initially, there is an adjustment period where you may feel soreness or discomfort in your teeth or surrounding tissue. You can use over-the-counter pain relievers to keep you comfortable.

Within a few days, you will adapt to the feeling of braces when you talk and chew food. If discomfort occurs following the placement of your braces, let Dr. Hukmani know as soon as possible. He can make necessary adjustments to ensure you’re comfortable.

In certain cases, some patients may be good candidates for orthodontic corrections with the Invisalign system, that uses clear plastic aligners custom-fit to your teeth. This ensures aligners are comfortable and secure in your mouth.

How often do I need to have my braces checked?

Dr. Hukmani schedules routine appointments to track the gradual movement of your teeth. He also evaluates the overall health of your mouth during treatment.

Routine cleanings are an important part of good oral care. Food particles that remain on the wires and brackets, may attract bacteria that can result in cavities and other oral health issues. It is very important that you brush your teeth following every meal and snack.

Will I need to wear a retainer?

When Dr. Hukmani removes your braces, you will still need to wear your retainers full time to keep your teeth in alignment for the first year. After that, you may need to wear your retainers only during the night when you sleep.
